KFC is giving away a free piece of chicken today at participating locations. However, this time around they will not be offering free chicken via promotion on the “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and coupons on the talk show’s website. This May giveaway left KFC’s nationwide with lines out the door and patrons with coupons in hand but not enough chicken to go around. Yahoo reports that KFC will be more prepared for this promotion and certainly hungry diners will come pouring in.
We here at Moneysaver are huge fans of this promotion, just as we were back in May when KFC utilized Oprah Winfrey and her massive reach. Not only have these chicken giveaways created great buzz for KFC, but the coupons drove herds of customers to the restaurants. KFC is getting great exposure for their grilled chicken and introducing new people to their products via freebies. Keep it up KFC, and hopefully other businesses will follow.
So you want to save money? Well, what is the best way to get your attention, 50% OFF? $10 OFF? Buy 1, Get 1 FREE? Here is where the consumer can help the business owner. For example, the value of a free appetizer could exceed that of $5 off the entire check, but the restaurant will see more $5 off coupons redeemed. Not only is it easier to quantify, but maybe the diner does not want an appetizer. The $5 off coupon can be used by anyone, and therefore will please more customers AND generate more business for the restaurant.
The consumer is looking to save money, and they do not want to think about details. It is as easy as simplifying for success.

Actually, every month is national coupon month now. The summer is over, and there is some optimism about the economy, but these past 12 months have given coupons new life. They have always been a staple in the American family, however, new consumers & businesses have been exposed to their benefits. A recent Brandweek article touches on this “coupon usage renaissance” that we have seen this year.
Coupon clipping has become more of a daily, weekly and monthly activity. Consumers are actively seeking them out, as opposed to waiting for the savings to be delivered. The spending culture has changed and many merchants can now see how coupons can increase their business. We are into September and coupon use will continue to grow as the kids go back to school and another season begins.
Moneysaver has championed online coupons as a quick way to find discounts 24/7. It is as easy as checking email or updating your Facebook status. A recent Brandweek article touched on the HUGE usage increase on Coupons.com . In this down economy, consumers have been exposed to different ways to save money and “convenience,” “migration to the Internet,” and “decline of newspapers” are all contributing to this large increase.
The fall of newspapers coupled with the state of the economy has allowed for this rise of online coupons. Businesses are now more prone to provide money saving offers in different outlets. And the consumers will continue to look for these coupons.
One thing is for sure these days- deals are out there and consumers are looking for them. Shoppers have been turning to the grocery coupons in their local papers for ages, but now there are many different ways to find savings. The Asbury Park Press notes that in addition to the Sunday paper, the internet is a great tool for finding savings where you can simply “type in the search terms ‘free coupons.’”
The search engines can really be useful with a general ‘free coupon’ search or even when you want to look into discounts for your local businesses. It is as easy as searching for coupons in your city or even narrowing it down to a specific business. Just another way to save money with coupons!

As part of Costco Wholesale’s community event to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network, Moneysaver of NJ participated in their recent Business Expo. It was a great turnout with a number of local businesses on hand along with thousands of shoppers. The Moneysaver table featured coupon books to hand out to the shoppers. It was very clear that people love to save money and could not turn down “free coupons.” The report from this Costco Wholesale was that the shoppers could not get enough of the Moneysaver coupons and more importantly it was for a great charity!
Miami Herald reports that with prom around the corner, teens are looking for ways to save. You only have your senior prom once, great to see that these students are raising money and taking advantage of unique deals. Have to appreciate 17 and 18 year olds looking to save a couple bucks and I would guarantee they are doing it in style.
